Bowling Strategy
Great bowling isn't just about skill - it's about outsmarting the batsman. Learn how to set up batsmen, use field placements, and execute plans under pressure.
Setting Up a Batsman
The best wickets often come from a well-executed plan over several deliveries. Here's how to set up different types of batsmen:
The Driving Batsman
- Bowl good length outside off stump repeatedly
- Let them leave or defend several balls
- Pitch one slightly fuller - they'll drive
- With slip and gully in place, edge goes to hand
The Puller/Hooker
- Bowl full and straight to start
- Establish the fuller length as "normal"
- Set a deep square leg and fine leg
- Bowl a sharp bouncer - top edge to fielder
The Spinner (Against Spin)
- Flight the ball, invite them to come down
- Bowl slightly quicker when they advance
- Vary pace to disrupt timing
- Stumping or caught at slip/leg slip
Pro Tip
The best plans require patience. It might take 12-15 balls to execute a plan. Don't rush it - the wicket will come.

Field Placements
Field placement is crucial. The right field supports your bowling plan and creates catching opportunities while limiting scoring.
Fast Bowling Fields
- • New ball: 3-4 slips, gully, short leg
- • Middle overs: 2 slips, cover, mid-off
- • Death overs: Long-on, long-off, fine leg
- • Bouncer: Deep square, fine leg, leg gully
Spin Bowling Fields
- • Off-spin: Slip, short leg, silly point
- • Leg-spin: Slip, leg slip, short leg
- • Defensive: Deep cover, long-on, deep mid-wicket
- • Attacking: 2 close catchers, men around bat
Powerplay Bowling Tactics
ODI Powerplay (Overs 1-10)
Only 2 fielders allowed outside the 30-yard circle. Key strategies:
- ✓ Bowl full and straight - make batsmen play
- ✓ Use swing while the ball is new
- ✓ Attack the stumps - wickets are priority
- ✓ Use slips even if boundaries are hit
- ✓ Don't be afraid to bowl yorkers early
T20 Powerplay (Overs 1-6)
Same restrictions but more aggressive batting. Adapt accordingly:
- ✓ Vary your lengths - don't be predictable
- ✓ Use slower balls even in powerplay
- ✓ Bowl wide of off stump to reduce scoring
- ✓ Keep fine leg up for the flick
- ✓ One bouncer per over as surprise
Death Bowling Techniques
The last 5 overs can make or break a match. Death bowling is a specialized skill that requires nerve, accuracy, and smart thinking.
Death Bowling Playbook
Primary Weapons
- Yorkers (at stumps and wide)
- Slower ball variations
- Back of a length (chest height)
- Wide yorker outside off
Field Setting
- • Long-on and long-off essential
- • Fine leg for yorker mishits
- • Deep square for pulls
- • Third man for edges/mishits
Pro Tip
In death overs, execute your plan. Don't react to every boundary. If your plan is yorkers, keep bowling yorkers. One bad ball doesn't mean change everything.

Left-Handers vs Right-Handers
Bowling to Right-Handers
- Fast bowler: Target 4th/5th stump, use outswing
- Off-spinner: Ball turns into them - use arm ball
- Leg-spinner: Ball turns away - slider for LBW
- Left-arm orthodox: Natural angle away, drift back in
Bowling to Left-Handers
- Fast bowler: Angle across, use inswing
- Off-spinner: Ball turns away - attack off stump
- Leg-spinner: Ball turns in - googly turns away
- Left-arm orthodox: Natural advantage, ball turns in
Key tip: When a left-right combination is batting, change your line with each batsman. Don't bowl the same line to both - that makes one of them very comfortable.
Match Situation Awareness
Defending a Small Total
Attack with slips, take risks for wickets. Dot balls aren't enough - you need to bowl teams out.
Defending a Big Total
Build pressure, make them take risks. Wickets will come from mistakes as required rate climbs.
Breaking a Partnership
Change angles - bring spinner on, go around wicket. Try something different to disrupt rhythm.
